Resiliency in Children Who Became the Survivors of Merapi Eruption Considered from Local Wisdom of Javanese Culture

Abstrak

Disaster, whether it’s a natural disaster or a man-made disaster, is a series of events that threaten the society’s life and causing destruction of the environment, loss of properties and life, and disturbance of psychological condition. Often an entire community is impacted by a disaster and this emerges a variety of unique issues and coping challenges, including issues associated with specific types of natural disasters.
The eruption of Merapi Mountain in November 2010 was one of the natural disasters that caused a lot of damages and loss of life. The effects of this disaster impacted all the people who lived around the mountain’s area, including the children. These effects could possibly affect the psychological development of the children. These children needed to adapt to the devastating event and cope with their frightening experience through their resilience.
Resiliency lies in being able to act, to control the feeling of helplessness, and to convince oneself to do something to make things better for themselves and for others. Few researches had shown that resiliency is affected by the people’s understanding of their values of local wisdom. One of the local wisdoms in Javanese culture is nrima ing pandum, which is an ability to accept even the worst thing and take it as strength to cope with whatever happens in one’s life.
The aim of this article is to give a view of resiliency of the children who became the survivors of Merapi eruption and to give a view about how they accepted the values of local wisdom in their resilience process. This research took place at Dusun Cabean Kulon, Desa Bringin, Kecamatan Srumbung, Kabupaten Magelang. This village is located at the northern of Merapi mountain and became one of the villages that affected directly by Merapi eruption. This research used survey, interview, and observation to the children who lived in Dusun Cabean Kulon as its methods.
The result of this research showed that there had been a decreasing of understanding of local wisdom in these children. The biggest factor affected their resilience was supports from caring adults such as the volunteers of the disaster.
